Making Something Special After the Loss of a Beloved Pet.

Losing a pet is a heartbreak that settles deep into the bones. When Poppy passed away, her family felt a kind of pain that words struggle to hold. She wasn’t just a pet. She was a companion, a comfort, a constant presence woven into their everyday life. When Rachelle reached out to me, she shared how overwhelming the grief felt and how afraid she was that others might not understand the depth of their loss. She knew I had recently said goodbye to my own beloved Hamish, and because of that, she felt she would be in safe, understanding hands. I will never forget the tenderness in that message.

Rachelle asked if I could create some keepsakes from Poppy’s favourite blankets, toys and the jumper she was wearing the last time she held her. These items carried so much love, so much memory, so much of Poppy herself. It was an honour to be trusted with something so precious.

The Precious Pooh Bear Blanket.

Among all of Poppy’s belongings, one item stood out as the most treasured of all — her yellow Pooh Bear blanket. It had been with her through so many moments of comfort and rest. Rachelle asked if I could incorporate this blanket into each keepsake dog so that every family member would have a piece of something deeply meaningful.

I spent a long time planning how to use the blanket in a way that honoured its importance. I managed to place a Pooh Bear on the tummy of every keepsake dog, making sure it sat proudly and clearly. I was also able to create an ear from the blanket for each one. It felt like a way of keeping Poppy’s favourite comfort close to everyone who loved her.

Creating Keepsakes Filled With Love.

The rest of the keepsakes were made from the remaining blankets, toys and the jumper Rachelle wore during her final moments with Poppy. I worked carefully to ensure each keepsake dog was as similar as possible so that no one felt they had “more” or “less” of Poppy’s belongings. Every stitch was placed with intention. Every pattern piece was chosen with care. I wanted each keepsake to feel like a soft, gentle reminder of the love Poppy gave so freely.

Rachelle also asked for each keepsake to have Poppy’s name embroidered on it, along with the nickname given to her by the family member receiving it. These little details made each one feel personal and deeply connected to the person who would hold it.

A Shared Understanding of Grief.

Working on these keepsakes was emotional in the most meaningful way. Having recently lost Hamish myself, I understood the ache that sits in the chest, the longing to hold onto something that still carries their presence. I knew how important it was that these keepsakes felt right. That they brought comfort. That they honoured Poppy in a way that felt gentle and true.

It was a privilege to create something that would help Rachelle and her family through their grief. Instead of packing Poppy’s precious belongings away in a cupboard, they now have something they can hold, cuddle and cherish forever. Something that keeps her close.

Creating a Pet Keepsake after Pet Loss.

Creating these keepsakes for Rachelle and her family was one of the greatest honours of my work. To be trusted with such meaningful items, especially during such a vulnerable time, is something I never take lightly.
